There have been numerous studies done showing that chromium picolinate makes insulin more effective, thereby lowering cholesterol, improving blood sugar levels, and improving overall body composition. In a prior study by the same investigators, 180 individuals with Type 2 diabetes demonstrated significant improvements in glucose, insulin and cholesterol after taking chromium picolinate supplementation.

These beneficial effects were greater after four months than after two months. And individuals receiving 1000 mcg/day of chromium had better results than those receiving 200 mcg/day. As a follow-up, the long-term study was conducted with individuals taking 500 mcg/day.

Anderson Journal of Trace Elements in Experimental Medicine 12:55-60, 1999 Key Findings Individuals with Type 2 diabetes consuming 500 mcg/day of chromium picolinate had significant decreases in their fasting and postprandial blood glucose as well as significant long-term improvements in their diabetic symptoms. Study Summary In this study, 833 people with Type 2 diabetes, consuming 500 mcg/day of chromium as chromium picolinate, were monitored for a period of one year. There was an 85% reduction in the number of individuals reporting symptoms of excessive thirst, urination or fatigue after the first month of supplementation. In greater than 90% of the subjects, blood glucose was significantly reduced after one month of supplementation, with the values remaining reduced for one year or more.
