CoEnzyme Q10

Did you know that taking prescription medicines for lowering cholesterol could actually deplete the body of an incredibly important nutrient?

That nutrient is Coenzyme Q10.

CoQ10 is an essential and natural compound that helps the cells in our bodies produce energy. It is especially abundant in the heart. The heart contains a huge number of energy-producing cells called mitochondria, and its here that CoQ10 is found. It's a good thing, too. Our heart can't run out of energy to pump, or else we die.

In addition to creating energy, CoQ10 also helps preserve the power of certain nutrients, like Vitamin E, and works with these nutrients to prevent accumulation of oxidized cholesterol.

Studies are constantly demonstrating how well CoQ10 does for supporting people with heart disease. Its especially useful in patients with heart-muscle disorders, and its the standard treatment for congestive heart failure in Japan. Italian researchers showed that CoQ10 reduced shortness of breath and leg swelling in 80% of heart patients.

One study showed CoQ10 to produce as good a result as standard drug therapy for angina, but without any side effects.

For heart patients, a deficiency in CoQ10 would be like trying to run an automobile without a fuel pump. No matter how much fuel you have, without a fuel pump it won't get to the engine. In fact, a study showed that after 3 months on CoQ10, cardiomyopathy patients significantly improved the amount of blood pumped by their hearts.

CoQ10 is a nice surprise for those trying to lose weight. A study was done for 8 weeks with overweight individuals. When supplementing with CoQ10, they lost an average of thirty pounds! Maybe its because CoQ10 helps metabolize fat for energy, but the addition of CoQ10 helped these folks to lose weight, enjoy greater energy, and improve heart function.

Aging and certain medications deplete our stores of CoQ10. Replenish CoQ10 with oily fish and organ meats, like liver.

CoQ10 also comes as a supplement. I think the best way to assure you're getting the proper amounts is to supplement with an oil form of CoQ10 rather than a powdered form.
