Antifungal Kit Basics

Did you know that using only one antifungal supplement over and over is less effective than alternating between several?

This is the advice Doug Kaufmann gives every week on Know the Cause.

I've been a fan of Doug's for a long time, and here's what I know: Doug knows fungus. He's done this for over 35 years, and he's tried nearly everything on himself and in his clinics. If he recommends something for fungal infections, I listen. And so have many other practitioners.

It's kinda funny to read books on the subject now because rotating antifungals is routinely recommended. And Doug started it all. So why should you rotate antifungal supplements? I like to think of it in baseball terms. If a pitcher only throws fastballs straight down the middle, the batter starts recognizing the pattern. But if the pitcher is constantly changing his throws, the batter is always off guard. That's a simple way of saying that it's a good idea to always hit fungi with a different kind of nutrient.

Some antifungals are called "fungi-static". That means that they stop the fungus from reproducing. Others are called "fungi-cidal". These actually kill the fungi. Some supplements work on the DNA of the fungi, and others enzymatically break down the fungi's cell wall. There are a variety of ways to address the fungal load, and I think it's a good idea to use them all.

So what are some good supplements to try? Caprylic Acid is probably the most popular. It's derived from coconut and was approved for over-the-counter use in 1984. It has been shown to cause fungus to completely disappear in stool samples.

Olive leaf extract is rich with flavonoids and antioxidants. It seems to keep fungus from reproducing, and has a particularly strong effect when fungi attack the heart.

Garlic has been used for centuries as a remedy for cholesterol, pneumonia, and other infectious diseases. A professor at Loma Linda University says that garlic is a highly effective antifungal agent, and has beneficial effects even in small amounts.

Psyllium has been the standard fiber supplement for years. In the Fungus Link 1, it says that Psyllium is one of the only substances to actually absorb fungi's poisonous mycotoxins.

And no regimen would be complete without a good multivitamin and good probiotic.
