Did you know that probiotics stimulate the immune function in critically ill patients?

In March of 2007, Canadian researchers were studying patients who were at risk for something called Multiple Organ Dysfunction Syndrome. This is a major cause of death among patients in intensive care. It begins with a breakdown in the barrier function in the gut, and leads to immune system dysfunction. The researchers thought that since this begins in the gut, maybe probiotics would help. At the end of 7 days, patients who took probiotics had a significant increase in immune proteins.

So probiotics aren't just for heartburn anymore! Probiotics are the beneficial bacteria that live in the intestines. They do so much for our bodies, but they immediately help the digestion and absorption of our food. After a course of antibiotics, both bad and good bacteria are eliminated from our intestines. This can be a huge problem because probiotics protect us from the overgrowth of yeast in the intestines. If the good bacteria are gone, the yeast can quickly overtake the terrain. Supplementing with probiotics is an excellent "everyday" idea, but its critical after antibiotic use.

There are many different strains of good bacteria. You're probably very familiar with Acidophilus. Many milk products, and all yogurt products are fortified with this bacterium. Bifidus is another popular one, and tends to work best in the colon.

There's a couple you may not have heard of, though. One is called L. Plantarum. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reports that this strain is effective for reducing the pain and symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome. It's excellent at keeping unfriendly bacteria from colonizing in the colon, and does a terrific job of helping to digest proteins and essential fats.

L. Reuteri is another good strain thats becoming more popular. This probiotic secretes a substance called "reuterin", which naturally suppresses the growth of unfriendly microbes. One of the most interesting things it does is help to increase the size of our intestines' villi - tiny finger-like projections on the intestinal wall that absorb nutrients from food. The longer the villi, the more nutrients are absorbed in our bodies.
