Fibromyalgia
Did you know that fibromyalgia is one of the most common conditions seen by rheumatologists,
and yet it is one of the least understood disorders today?
Fibromyalgia is defined by a set of symptoms. Since it's characterized by an overreaction to normal circumstances, doctors have traditionally viewed this as a psychological disorder. As a result, thousands of women have been prescribed antidepressants to deal with it.
The typical symptoms include stiff shoulders, and pain in the back, hips, and knees. Other symptoms include sleeplessness and constant fatigue. Women can also experience persistent depression, PMS, irritability, anxiety, and memory problems. It's like all of the fatigue and strain of normal life comes crashing in and works its way through the body.
It's interesting that fibromyalgia is often thought of as a by-product of the Western lifestyle. You almost never see it in underdeveloped countries. So what's so unique about our lifestyle that brings this on? Well, the Standard American Diet has to be a huge contributor. Giant portions of greasy, sugary, and breaded foods are the norm in America now. It's hard to imagine going to a restaurant nowadays without huge portions of breads and sodas. Without adequate nutrients, the body has a tough time dealing with the demands of normal life.
Our hurried lifestyle can also create stress and anxiety. Without adequate rest and healthy ways of dealing with stress, our immune systems become as overworked as we are. We're starting to see drug companies coming up with medicines to treat fibromyalgia, but I'm not sure if another chemical for our bodies to deal with is the answer.
In addition to a clean diet and multi-vitamin, I'd look for immune support through berry seeds and oils. I'd also look at things like apple cider vinegar, CoQ10, and Alpha Lipoic Acid, and Grape Seed Extract. Malic acid from apple cider vinegar can help the severity of muscle symptoms associated with fibromyalgia. CoQ10, a terrific energy nutrient, is often lacking in women with fibromyalgia. Stress relieving herbs like hops and valerian have also helped people deal with anxiety for centuries.
There are a number of effective nutrients to help deal with fibromyalgia. If you'd like more information about what you can do, give me a call or visit one of the following pages:
