Chronic Heartburn
Did you know that so many people have chronic heartburn, acid inhibitors are one of the biggest selling prescription medications every single year?
I'm worried about this because I hate to see us artificially reducing stomach acid.
It's put there for a reason.
Stomach acid not only helps to break down our food, but it's also a defense against any microbes we may consume when we eat food. In other words, I think stomach acid is good for you.
But if you're suffering with GERD, this doesn't seem like much consolation. So what can we do about it? Once you're eating a clean diet, I would investigate a supplement regimen starting with digestive enzymes. I take enzymes with every meal because I used to have heartburn. But once I started taking enzymes, the food is broken down better, and the body can absorb the nutrients better. The best ones are comprehensive, and have enzymes to break down proteins, fats, simple sugars and complex carbs.
Probiotics have also really helped me a lot. One of the things probiotics does is help the body break down food and also absorb the food better. There are too many other benefits to talk about this time, but I also especially like the antifungal actions of certain strains of probiotics, like Rhamnosus and Planterum. I've added both of these to my probiotic regimen and I really feel the difference.
One of the supplements you may not think about for digestive health is L-Glutamine. L-Glutamine is an amino acid that is used by every cell in the body, but is really useful in the intestines. Its necessary for the synthesis of the intestinal cells, as well as certain immune cells. I take a scoop of L-Glutamine several times a day. It mixes so easy in water, and is an inexpensive way to keep the gut and the immune system healthy.
I also recommend a good fiber supplement to just about everyone. I take one now that has kamut grass in it. This is a healthy grain that's harvested while its green. The chlorophyll is a great blood builder, and it's antifungal. This one also has slippery elm, which is one of the more soothing and coating intestinal nutrients I've ever come across. These and other supplements have made heartburn a thing of the past for me.
