Diabetes Support

Most of you know by now that my dad, Dr. Gary Evans, discovered chromium picolinate, and it's been one of the most popular supplements for Type 2 diabetes ever since.

But did you know there are some other great supplements available for diabetes support?

I am so glad to have seen the success of chromium pic over the years. Dad is, too! So many people have been able to successfully control their blood sugar using this simple mineral. The reason people need it is because we usually don't get enough of it in the Standard American Diet. It's a mineral that's essential for carbohydrate and fat metabolism, and it may even help to normalize triglyceride levels.

And while this supplement should be a foundational supplement for any diabetes nutrition program, there are some other newer supplements that deserve to be there, too. Alpha lipoic acid is one example. This is a powerful antioxidant found in foods like broccoli and spinach. Alpha lipoic acid helps recycle other antioxidants to help keep levels high in the body. It's great for diabetics because it helps transform blood sugar into energy, something diabetics often have challenges with. German studies have revealed another great benefit of this nutrient in helping with complications of diabetes, such as peripheral neuropathy. Excess blood sugar can eventually damage nerves and cause burning, pain, and itching. So you can see how alpha lipoic acid can really be a huge help.

Incredibly, cinnamon is showing some real promise in diabetes. A controlled trial reported in Diabetes Care showed that cinnamon produced significant reductions in blood sugar, total cholesterol, and triglycerides. Another study found that cinnamon caused diabetics' cells to become sensitive to glucose again. This can be a safe and easy addition to almost anyone's regimen.

Another simple strategy is consuming adequate fiber. I personally take a fiber supplement every day, and studies have shown that fiber can help keep blood sugar levels normalized, as well as help lower cholesterol.

Each of these, along with a good diet and a good multi-vitamin/mineral supplement should give everyone with diabetes a reason for optimism.
