Prostate Enlargement

Did you know that 70 percent of men over the age of 60 experience symptoms of prostate enlargement, or BPH?

These symptoms include difficulty urinating, the feeling of having to go to the bathroom all the time, and also poor sleep from the trips to the bathroom at night.

There are good options, though, for men who want to use a nutritional approach for dealing with this. When a man begins a good diet, he should also consider a supplement that contains extra zinc, for starters. The prostate contains ten times more zinc than any other place in the body, and it is known for it's ability to shrink the prostate and alleviate symptoms.

Saw palmetto is a nutrient commonly prescribed in Europe as primary treatment for BPH. The studies on saw palmetto have been impressive, showing relief of almost every symptom in some men after only 45 days.

Pygeum is another standard herb used for BPH symptoms. In addition to concentrating zinc into the prostate, pygeum also helps to lower prolactin, a hormone that's commonly elevated in men with prostate disorders. It also seems to help eliminate excess fluid in the prostate.

Something else that contributes to BPH is when the prostate is overstimulated by testosterone and related hormones. When that happens, the prostate cells can multiply and grow. Clinical evidence indicates that this process can be interrupted by extracts of pumpkin seeds. In a 1988 study, prostate patients were given a supplement containing pumpkin seed. 80 percent of those patients no longer needed surgery or medical treatment after taking the supplement for a number of months. What's more, there were no side effects.

More recent studies strongly recommend using a plant called nettles with these other supplements. Nettles seem to work with other nutrients to block the hormones from enlarging the prostate, and German physicians use it routinely for men suffering with this condition.

It may also be a good idea to add natural bioflavonoids like grape seed extract and quercetin, which have anti-inflammatory effects, and can help with the swelling.

There are so many safe, natural options for men these days, and if you'd like more information about them, just give me a call or visit the ZFD Saw Palmetto, Zinc Picolinate, Free Radical Defense and/or Nettle pages.
