Strengthen Bones
You probably already know that obesity is linked with heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and a number of other health conditions.
But did you know that being overweight also puts you at risk for weak bones?
Last November, in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, an article was published saying that people with a higher percentage of body fat had nearly ten percent weaker bones than those with normal body weight. Just think what this means. If you're a woman over the age of fifty, you've probably been told that its time to be thinking about osteoporosis, and taking steps to prevent it. Well just imagine if you're already at risk for weak bones, and you're overweight! It's like a double-risk for so many Americans.
I especially worry about people past retirement age who may be overweight. A bone break at this age could mean immobility and an awfully long recovery. So, I think we should pay attention to our weight and take measures to strengthen our bones all at the same time.
First, I would substitute one or two meals with a good meal replacement powder. The protein boosters at the discount stores are so loaded with corn syrup and lacking in protein, that I wouldn't waste my money on them. Instead, I'd get one that had about fifteen grams of protein, less than a hundred calories, and loaded with vitamins and minerals. A recent study showed that the extra nutrients could help keep hunger under control. You can mix the meal replacement shake with water or your favorite juice. A good idea might be to put it into a blender along with berries, juice, and maybe a little plain yogurt. It'll taste great and be really nutritious. This, along with Doug's Phase One Diet, and exercise can jump start your weight loss.
If you need extra protection for your bones, I'd suggest starting with a good multivitamin, and then add a supplement that has extra calcium, vitamin D, vitamin K, and boron. But do not rely on calcium alone because it needs other nutrients for absorption.
