L-Tryptophan

Did you know that L-Tryptophan is available for sale here in the United States?

Its true!

For years you couldn't find L-Tryptophan anywhere on the shelves. The reason? A batch of this incredible amino acid was shipped from overseas. It turns out that the batch was mishandled and genetically modified to help increase production and cut costs. The genetic modification contaminated the entire batch. When discovered, it was quickly removed from the shelves. But as the story circulated, it was spun in a way to make people think that it was L-Tryptophan itself that caused harm, not the contaminant!

Interestingly, a ban on the sale of Tryptophan came just four days before the announcement that Prozac was hitting the market. Why did that raise some eyebrows? Because L-Tryptophan has been shown to do many of the same things Prozac does, but with no side effects.

This nutrient, found in virtually all protein foods like fish, eggs, and turkey does a number of remarkable things. People taking L-Tryptophan just tend to sleep better. Clinical research has confirmed what thousands of people experienced. Dr. Richard Wurtman of MIT went on to show that Tryptophan has considerable antidepressant properties. It seems to increase brain levels of serotonin, a calming neurotransmitter in the body, and something that's manipulated by nearly all modern prescription antidepressants.

It also increases melatonin, a sleep-inducing hormone secreted by the pineal gland. Melatonin is currently taken by many people to help them fall asleep and stay asleep. Tryptophan helps the body secrete it naturally.

But even more than these things, Tryptophan has been shown to be incredibly nourishing for the body. As an antioxidant, it may help slow the aging process. Newer studies suggest that tryptophan can also be effective for people with seasonal affective disorder - Cabin Fever!

The good news for all of us is the FDA is now allowing the sale of pure, high quality L-Tryptophan again without a prescription. Realizing the enormous number of benefits, there are human clinical trials being performed all over the country with this inexpensive dietary supplement. Rest assured, L-Tryptophan is safe and effective.
