Alzheimer's

Did you know that by the time I finish this segment, two more people will be diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease?

I was shocked when I read that one person is diagnosed with this awful disease every 72 seconds.

But Alzheimer's isn't supposed to be a normal part of aging. Yet more than five million people now have the disease, and that number just keeps growing. Now, maybe more than ever, every one of us needs to take steps to prevent this from happening to our loved ones and ourselves.

Understand, first we need to know what is happening in the brain of the Alzheimer's patient. The brain has 100 billion nerve cells. Each nerve cell communicates with others to form networks. These networks of cells are involved in thinking and remembering.

In Alzheimer's, these networks of cells begin breaking down, possibly because of plaque build-up. Pharmaceutical drugs are designed to help keep the communication chemicals between the nerves from breaking down, but they have unwanted side effects. To help prevent mental decline for my family, we depend on a number of strategies.

The diet should be such that plaque formation is less likely to occur. Doug's Phase One Diet is an excellent choice. Exercise is also a great habit, since it increases circulation throughout the entire body and has been shown to prevent dementia.

The supplements I depend of include a good multivitamin with plenty of vitamin E and the B-complex vitamins. I also take vinpocetine, ginkgo, and phosphatidylserine. These help with circulation, memory, oxygen uptake, mental clarity, and concentration.

I also take fish oil and berry seed oils to help discourage plaque buildup and to nourish the entire nervous system. And I take a special supplement that has a type of B-vitamin compound in it to help control cortisol levels. These are the very best brain nutrients I've found.

If you're serious about mental decline in yourself or your loved ones, there are nutrients that can help. Just give me a call or visit any of the links above to web pages for more information on these supplements.
