Insomnia
Did you know that one out of every three people in the United States has trouble falling asleep each night?
That means one hundred twenty million people suffer from some level of insomnia.
Prescription and over-the-counter sleeping pills are among the most popular medications sold.
Whether its stress that keeps you awake at night or something else, its important to get this under control. I've found that if I'm not sleeping, almost nothing else I do for health seems as effective. Rest not only re-energizes our bodies, it also rejuvenates our brains and allows our immune systems to function properly.
So what can we do about insomnia? Well, if you're tired all the time during the day from not sleeping at night, this may seem like strange advice, but exercising can really help with insomnia. You won't be able to start out exercising as long or as hard as you eventually will, but just do a little extra here and there to get the body moving. People who exercise tend to sleep easier, sleep better, and wake up more energized than people who don't.
Next, I would address the stress in my life. A good combination herbal stress formula could both help ease tension during the day, and also help you to be more relaxed by bedtime. I would rely on a formula that contains herbs like valerian root and passionflower. Both of these have a soothing, relaxing effect for most people, and both have been used for centuries to help with insomnia. Hops and skullcap are also herbs I would use to help with the tension and anxiety we all sometimes experience.
One of my favorite insomnia nutrients is the amino acid L-Tryptophan. I would take this at bedtime on an empty stomach along with a little B-complex for terrific sleep. Studies show it to help the circadian rhythms balance out, and to help balance the hormones that prevent depression from occurring.
And of course, don't forget to take a multivitamin and mineral formula that has extra calcium, magnesium, and potassium to keep your nerves calm.
