Brain Nutrients

Did you know that mental decline isn't just due to aging?

We all know that as we get older, our thinking can become a little fuzzier than when we were in our twenties.

Studies have shown that the number of neurons in our brain can begin to diminish as we age.

But does that mean we have to plan on dealing with dementia, forgetfulness, and even Alzheimer's? Not at all. Keep in mind, though, that people can begin to experience mental lapses at relatively younger ages.

For example, the Cleveland Clinic recently did a study showing how people will often experience cognitive decline after surgery. A major medical journal reported that people with diabetes are at risk for developing mental challenges earlier in life than those without the disease. The University of Maine reports that people as young as 18 who have high blood pressure can experience a decline in mental function - as can those with heart disease. And it has long been known that the use of alcohol and tobacco can contribute to the problem, as well.

So what can we do to turn the tide? The first thing we can do is exercise. Exercise can increase circulation to the entire body, bringing valuable nutrients to our cells. Studies have shown this to be a critical part of keeping our brains healthy.

Equally critical is our nutrition. We all know that Phase One foods like grass-fed beef, fish, eggs, and fruits and vegetables should be the cornerstones of our diet. Recently, science has found that a ½ -cup of blueberries each day, along with fish oil, can be a great way to keep our minds sharp.

In addition to food, our supplements can provide a wealth of brain-friendly nourishment. Dr. Ward Dean recommends vinpocetine, a compound in the periwinkle plant, for memory. He has shown it to be effective even in people who have had a stroke. Phosphatidylserine is also a great nutrient that is naturally found in the brain, and helps to enhance mental focus and clarity. Ginkgo biloba is also a very popular herb for mental clarity. Ginkgo is prescribed over a million times each month in Europe, and is available here without a prescription. It has been shown to improve blood flow to the brain, and increases the amount of ATP, the energy molecule, throughout the body.

Exercise, eat right, and consider these highly active supplements for great mental health.
