How well have you eaten this week?

Did you know that even though we are one of the most overweight societies in the world, we are also one of the least nourished?

Its hard to imagine, but its possible to be over-fed, and under-nourished.

Over twenty years ago, the USDA did a study to find out what Americans' nutritional habits were like. The results were unfortunate. Most of our diets were completely inadequate, nutritionally. In some age groups, 80 percent of the people didn't even hit the minimum Recommended Daily Allowance of vitamins and minerals. The National Research Council reports that roughly 50 percent of Americans show at least marginal deficiencies.

What's more, these are deficiencies for the Recommended Daily Allowance of nutrients which were originally set around the time of World War II to prevent conditions like scurvy and berberi from malnutrition. It was never intended as a means of optimizing health.

Since then, our understanding of nutrition has exploded, and we now know that essential vitamins and minerals are the cornerstone strategy for preventing many chronic diseases, enhancing our energy levels, and providing foundational immune support.

But the RDAs have never been updated to the level that most nutritionists feel is adequate. It's no secret that our soil is generally depleted of important nutrients. This matters because we're often told that we get all the nourishment we need from a healthy diet. But even if every single meal we eat comes from organic farms, we still need to consider supplementation.

Understand that the body doesn't make most vitamins and minerals. We have to consume them. And a marginal nutrient deficiency can disrupt our entire physiology.

Therefore, our goal should be to eat the very best foods we can afford - organic if possible. Lots of fruits and vegetables, good proteins, and good fats will go a long way in helping our overall health and vitality. It just seems like wise to also include a good multivitamin every single day to help close any nutrition gaps we may have.
