When Logic Supersedes Science

When medical people fail to discover the root cause of a disease, their approach is not to devote more studies to the dilemma-rather they surgically remove it!

I keep a file on my computer marked "ridiculous research." Due partially to the success of my TV show, I receive hundreds of fascinating clippings and zany research papers from viewers. These include many nurses and physicians who feel, as I do, that we have hit the nail on the proverbial head with our 30-year-old discovery of the fungal link to most diseases.

My first entry is dated March 2005. This paper defines the word "danger," as far as I am concerned. When medical people fail to discover the root cause of a disease, their approach is not to devote more studies to the dilemma-rather they surgically remove it! Enter the National Library of Medicine's consumer health website with a paper entitled, "Preventive Mastectomy Removes Breast Cancer Risk." Imagine that! By removing both breasts, a woman's chance of getting breast cancer declines. Wouldn't logic dictate that the risk is eliminated? These "prophylactic mastectomies," believe it or not, are based on the inexact science of DNA testing associated with disease predictability. As many have previously pointed out, even if the science were accurate, the familial risk of breast cancer is very low.

If you're concerned about breast cancer, lifestyle changes, in my humble opinion, would be a much wiser choice than having both breasts removed "just in case."

Next, we have a fascinating look into the minds of our family practitioners, who have been taught that Crohn's disease has nothing to do with diet. Yet, interestingly, the excerpt below refers to digesting pig worm eggs in order to relieve the symptoms associated with this disease. It reads, the "absolutely astounding recent success in treating Crohn's disease by feeding patients live ova of the pig whipworm opens the door to an exciting new approach to treating autoimmune diseases, J. John Cohen, M.D., declared at a meeting of the Colorado Chapter of the American College of Physicians." How sad to have graduated from medical school, be $120,000 in debt, and learn that swallowing the live ova (eggs) of whipworms found in pigs is a viable treatment for Crohn's disease. Disgusting as it may seem to you and me, to physicians who have no earthly idea that Crohn's is often a fungal and dietary problem, this marks a "breakthrough!" Where is Rodney Dangerfield when we really need him?

Finally, nothing really concerns me more than news magazines devoting their covers to THE BEST HOSPITALS IN AMERICA. In her own words, Associated Press's medical writer, Lindsey Tanner, states, "Many of the nation's top-ranked medical centers employ some of the same advertising techniques doctors often criticize drug companies for- concealing risks and playing on fear, vanity and other emotions to attract patients, a study found."

I, for one, actively avoid hospitals and medical centers because I absolutely fear nutritionally uninformed physicians treating me for any condition. To that end, however, I must learn how to maintain my health.

The magazine you hold in your hands is a wonderful educational tool. Use it monthly and heed the information in it!

America is respected worldwide for our advancements in medical technology, yet despite this fact its inhabitants are a sick bunch. Is this despite medical research, or because of it? A truly sophisticated medical community simply does not propose bilateral breast removal as a means of avoiding breast cancer any more than it recommends bilateral wrist removal to avoid carpal tunnel syndrome, although that may be next. It doesn't offer archaic therapies like eating pig worm eggs as a treatment modality to young and inquisitive medical doctors and refer to the same as "an exciting new approach." Finally, true medical genius lies not in padding the egos of doctors and hospitals with "best of" magazine covers, but in the astute doctors' innate ability to know that there is hope far beyond chemical drug therapies. At least they are becoming inquisitive!
