Overweight & Obesity Facts
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:
- About 65% of Americans are either overweight or obese. (Overweight is 10 to 30 pounds over a healthy weight. Obese is 30 or more pounds over).
- Annual medical costs for an obese person are nearly 38% more, or $732 higher, than the costs for someone of normal weight.
- A Medicare recipient who is obese costs $1,486 more per year than a person who's at a healthy weight.
- The annual medical spending for overweight and obesity in the United States is about 9% of national medical costs.
Being overweight or obese increases the risk of many diseases and health conditions, including the following:
- Hypertension
- Dyslipidemia (for example, high total cholesterol or high levels of triglycerides)
- Type 2 diabetes
- Coronary heart disease
- Stroke
- Gallbladder disease
- Osteoarthritis
- Sleep apnea and respiratory problems
- Some cancers (endometrial, breast, and colon).
