Did you know that drugs and surgery are not the only solutions for an enlarged prostate? It seems like a fact of life that as we get older, the late night trips to the bathroom are just a reality, but we really can protect ourselves from the prostate problems.

Here’s what we know about aging and prostate health: most men over the age of 60 experience the benign enlargement of the prostate gland, or BPH. About 9 million men over the age of 50 have been diagnosed with it, and 70 percent of men over 60 experience symptoms of BPH.

Men with BPH feel like they have to urinate all the time, but may have a tough time actually doing it. The reason is inflammation. The prostate begins to swell, and it can grow so large that it pushes on the bladder, constantly creating pressure. That swelling also tends to constrict the urethra, so little or no urine can pass.

It’s a problem that conventional medicine usually treats with drugs or surgery.  But that comes at a cost. The second greatest cost to Medicare, at over 2.5 billion dollars a year, is for BPH treatments.

I think its time we put the brakes on and implement some natural strategies to stave off this painful and expensive condition.

First, I always go back to what Doug asks: what makes bread rise? Could yeast be the reason your prostate is rising? I wouldn’t hesitate to follow the Phase One Diet if I had BPH. I’d take a solid multivitamin, and I’d really investigate natural antifungals, like olive leaf extract and caprylic acid to keep the fungus at bay.

Next, there’s a variety of nutritional supplements that specifically act on the prostate. The most popular is called saw palmetto, and in recent studies, its been shown to be at least as effective as one of the most popular prescription drugs, but without the side effects. Pygeum comes from the bark of an African tree, and has been used for thousands of years for inflammation. Pumpkin Seed is often used because of its high vitamin E and anti-inflammatory effects. A recent study also confirmed that zinc may help shrink swollen prostate tissue.

These, along with a healthy diet and exercise could be the strategy to avoid the pain and expense of BPH. But look out - there’s a lot of products on the market that don’t have the right dose or concentration. Wanna know how to choose one that’s right for you? Call my office or visit the ZFD web page.
